Shazam
Shazam - Discover music, artists, videos & lyrics - Shazam Entertainment Ltd.
Shazam is an app for Macs, PCs, and smartphones, best known for its music identification capabilities that has expanded to integrations with cinema, advertising, TV and retail environments.
Shazam uses a smartphone or computer's built-in microphone to gather a brief sample of audio being played. Shazam creates an acoustic fingerprint based on the sample of music and compares it against a central database for a match. The input and signal-to-noise ratio is remarkable, as the service can work in noisy environments such as health clubs and grocery stores, even picking up sound from speakers far above in the ceiling.
If a match is found after "listening" performed by the app, the display shows the album cover with the ability to listen to another sample of the song, and links to services such as Apple iTunes, Spotify, YouTube, or Zune for purchase or other functions.
In October 2014, Shazam announced its technology has been used to identify 15 billion songs.
The free or low versions of the app run on Android, iOS, BlackBerry OS, and Windows systems.
Shazam Entertainment Limited was founded in 1999 by Chris Barton, Philip Inghelbrecht, Avery Wang, and Dhiraj Mukherjee.
