Official and Unofficial MTV VMA: Miley Cyrus Earns the Twerking of the Year Award at VMA Music Awards

Jawn Murray talks to CNN's Brianna Keilar about Miley Cyrus' controversial MTV VMA performance with Robin Thicke.

The 2013 MTV Video Music Awards were held on August 25, 2013 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Miley Cyrus unofficially won the unofficial award for TWERKING. If you don't know what twerking is, you will now: Twerking is also known as dirty dancing, as when a woman jiggles her rear end on the front of a man's pelvis while her hips are bent 90 degrees and her knees are mostly straight. That specific motion along with her Kiss Gene Simmons tongue wagging imitation has caused quite the Internet and media controversy. Cyrus earned the number one position for most searches ("Miley Cyrus") for August 25, 2013 with 10,000,000+ searches. This is what happens when music is going nowhere. The Parent Television Council opposed the MTV broadcast content.

“MTV has once again succeeded in marketing sexually charged messages to young children using former child stars and condom commercials — while falsely rating this program as appropriate for kids as young as 14. This is unacceptable.”

-- Dan Isett, PTC Director of Public Policy

The Parent Television Council director also asked, "How is this image of former child star Miley Cyrus "Hannah Montana" appropriate for 14-year-olds? How is it appropriate for children to watch Lady Gaga strip down to a bikini in the opening act? How is it appropriate for 14-year-olds to see a condom commercial and a promo for an R-rated movie during the first commercial break?”

Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, Justin Timberlake, NSYNC, One Direction, Lady Gaga! The VMA's were filled with stars, and their drama.
